Topics covered
Understand the principles of wall composition in buildings and fire protection methods to ensure safety, regulatory compliance and overall performance of construction adapted to Quebec needs.
TARGETED SUB-CATEGORIES
Training in construction execution - Building.
GENERAL OBJECTIVE
To provide construction professionals with an in-depth understanding of the different types of wall composition and fire protection systems, based on the requirements of the Quebec Building Code and industry best practices.
SPECIFIC OBJECTIVES
Building fires represent a critical risk to occupant safety and structural durability. Proper wall composition, including effective passive fire protection systems, is essential to slowing the spread of flames, maintaining structural integrity, and enabling the safe evacuation of building occupants in occupancy groups A, B, C, D, E and F, according to building code chapter 1,
BUILDING
In this course, we'll explore the different components of a wall (framing, insulation, vapour barriers, membranes, cladding, etc.) and their role in fire protection. We'll discuss common materials (e.g. gypsum, mineral wool, cementitious panels) and selection criteria based on their fire classification.
We'll also look in detail at applicable standards (including ULC, the National Building Code of Canada, and specific Quebec requirements), as well as construction methods for maintaining continuity of firewall systems at junctions, openings and penetration points.
Case studies, technical illustrations, concrete examples and practical exercises will be presented and practiced to support understanding. Participants will be equipped to make enlightened technical choices and supervise compliant implementation in line with the Quebec Construction Code, and to offer better building quality to their customers.
